Cuffley 12 13 Welwyn
Cuffley took on Welwyn 3rd XV at home on Saturday, fielding a strong looking side with returns for skipper Tom Webb, scrum half Matt Jones and second row Pete Rose.
After slow starts in previous games, Cuffley looked to come out firing quickly and did not disappoint with early sustained pressure being applied.
The first score came with the opposition scrum buckling early and this set the trend for the remainder of the game with Cuffley pack dominating throughout. From the resulting penalty the forwards took the ball on and continued to gain territory before Ross Lovett bulldozed over for the first score. Converted by full back Chris Wilson.
Cuffley continued to dominate territory and created another opportunity when fly half Aaron Elks chipped over and outpaced the opposition. However the try was disallowed as he could not quite ground the ball.
The home side did however convert their next opportunity. Again coming from a dominant scrum, Tom Webb picked and went and with a great show of strength, powered over the line for the second score of the day.
Welwyn did apply some pressure in the last minutes of the half however the defensive line of Cuffley never looked like being broken and a tremendous tackle from the returning Pete Rose ensured Cuffley went into half time 12-0 up.
The second half saw a change in momentum and some ill-discipline saw Cuffley's Number 8, Phil Rose, sin binned alongside Welwyn's number 7. Cuffley allowed Welwyn to gain a base to work from and their first try of the day came. This was followed by a penalty under the posts which took the game to 12-8 with Cuffley holding a slim advantage.
Following the extreme pressure, the Welwyn front row suffered injuries and the away side had to go uncontested scrums which changed the whole complexion of the game and the main attacking weapon was taken away from Cuffley.
Welwyn searching for the decisive score broke the Cuffley resolve and scored the winning try.
The home side almost snatched victory at the end. Good work from wing Ronan McIntyre with a superb off load to Ash Lawson who broke through only to be called back for a foot in touch.
Vast improvements were again made by Cuffley both defensively and in attack and the first win is round the corner. Thanks to Welwyn for the game and the continued support.
