Cuffley took on Bishops Stortford 4XV team at Rosedale on Saturday afternoon, still searching for their first win of the season.
The game started positively with sustained pressure from Cuffley resulting in a superb break from fly half Ross McBride nearly saw the first try go to the home side.
This set the trend for the entire first half with Cuffley continuing to trouble the visitors and the first score of the game should of gone to the Cuffley. A solid scrum from the Cuffley pack gave a platform for scrum half James Charlton to make a break and a superb offload found its way to Chris Wilson, who chipped over the full back collected and grounded the ball only for play to be brought back for a dubious forward pass.
The half did end with some pressure in the Cuffley half, however some exceptional defence meant the home side’s line never looked like being breached and the half time whistle followed.
In the second half both halfbacks James Charlton and Ross McBride as well as outside center Ollie Burns went off injured which led to a new look back line with Luke fisher stepping in at outside center Alex Keilty playing for the first time at full back and Reece Tyler on the wing.
However this didn't disrupt the defensive line and although Stortford did manage an early score it was an extremely hard fought for try. Twice the ball was held up by Ollie Newland and Ronan McIntyre respectively until the pressure finally told and the ball was bundled over the line by the stortford pack..
A second score for the visitors followed in similar fashion and was again totally against the run of play. .
This did not deter Cuffley as they continued to go for the win and nearly scored on two occasions once from a quick tap penalty from Chris Wilson who offloaded to Ashley Lawson who was hauled down just yards short and secondly from skipper Phil Rose who made a magnificent break to again fall only yards short.
Although Cuffley lost the game vast improvements were made with the home side dominating the majority of the game and certainly the better side lost. We hope to have Ollie Burns and Ross McBride back quickly after both suffered injuries. Finally thanks to our support and Stortford for a brilliant game!
