Hackney 50 11 Cuffley
Cuffley challenged Hackney away from home on Saturday still searching for their first victory of the season. Cuffley had the benefit of players returning from injury but were still short of a few key individuals.
Cuffley made a strong start and following some good work from the forwards and a break from fly half Ross McBride won a penalty that was kicked by wing Chris Wilson.
Hackney hit back almost immediately with a combination of good play from the home side and weak defence from Cuffley to go ahead.
Cuffley retook the lead through the boot of Chris Wilson with a penalty, awarded when the Hackney scrum was pushed backwards by the strong Cuffley pack. This was an indication of things to come with the Cuffley scrum continuing to dominate throughout the match.
The half ended 20-6 to Hackney when, again, a combination of good play from the home side and weak defence from Cuffley allowed the home side to increase their score.
Cuffley continued to be a struggle in the early parts of the second half with Hackney scoring with reasonable regularity.
However as the half went on the Cuffley pack started to make some telling inroads around the fringes to peg Hackney back. Some ill-discipline from scrum half Dan Pearce cost Cuffley and reduced them to 14 and meant a reshuffle for the Cuffley back line allowing Hackney to again regain the initiative.
The sole try for Cuffley came from a penalty. The dominant visitor scrum again earned it and No.8 Phil Rose broke quickly making significant ground. This was followed by a break from new scrum half Ross McBride who took the ball up to the opposition 22. The ball then came out to new fly half Chris Wilson who chipped over the Hackney defence hacked the ball on and dived on to the ball to score the only Cuffley try.
Although it was not the strongest performance from Cuffley the players are confident that they will come back better and learn from their mistakes! Thanks to our support and Hackney for the game.
