Cuffley 10 v 26 Barnet
The 3rd league game of the season saw Cuffley welcome Barnet Elizabethans 2nd's to Rosedale Sports Club.
Cuffley forced to field a side heavily depleted by injuries and absentees.
The first half was one to forget for Cuffley and reflected the makeshift side by conceding three tries in quick succession, although these were scored against the overall run of play.
Barnet, with a fantastic switch in the center, ran straight through the Cuffley back line to score. Cuffley looked on the receiving end of a hammering with 26 unanswered points with half an hour on the clock.
However, the last 5 minutes of the half showed a marked improvement and highlighted what Cuffley are capable of.
Second row Phil Rose took a quick penalty on half way and made 20 meters and offloading before fly half Jones spun the ball out and, following good work from centers Ollie Burns and Chris Wilson, full back Ross McBride and wing Ronan McIntyre both went close to going over.
Cuffley sustained the pressure from the forwards with both Ollie Newland and Phil Rose looking to push over but halftime came before we could touchdown.
Cuffley started the second half where they finished the first half. Intense pressure from the Cuffley pack saw Barnet give away a penalty. Another quick tap from skipper Phil Rose paid off this time with a try as he smashed over from 15 meters out.
The second score of the half again came from a forward. No.8 Mick Newcombe, out of retirement for one match only, and capping off a fantastic day for the Cuffley pack with a push over try.
Cuffley continued to push for further scores and got very close on a number of occasions although the final whistle came too early.
Although losing 26-10 the second half showed exactly what Cuffley can do and their never die attitude!
Thank you again for all the support and Barnet for the game.
