Cuffley 1st 19 10 South Oxhey

Cuffley played at home on a wet and muddy pitch against a strong and very physical Oxhey team that only know one way to play that being in your face and on the edge. The conditions did not suit Cuffley's style of play, with the first 25 minutes and Oxley playing down the hill both teams found themselves in a muddy midfield battle.

Cuffley struggled for clean ball at the breakdowns and the scrum, but our defence again kept us in the game. We just seemed to be going nowhere up the hill until what I thought was the turning point, you sometimes need a spark to get into the game properly it can be a big hit or a scrum against the head, for us it was a defensive ruck right in front of Cuffley's baying supporters, Oxhey took the ball to ground and formed a strong ruck our boy's came flying into the contact in numbers and on their feet drove the opposition cleanly off the ball for a great turnover. This was the spark we needed and working our way up the touchline with quick ball from a ruck ten meters out Crabby stepped inside their defence to score under the posts he added the conversion for a 7 point lead to end the half.

The second half with Cuffley now playing down the muddy slope our plan was to play to the corners and force Oxhey to make mistakes and for us to capitalize on them. Our kicking game was working and had them pinned in their 22 from a long chance in the far corner by Matt Deamer and Willy their fullback missed the ball and Willy pounced on a short hack through to score in the corner. Oxhey are a tough outfit and they came back at us and forced the ball over try the line the ref gave the try even though it was clearly held up, this was not to be the last questionable decision.

Cuffley were soon back in the game but now we started to dominant the scrums and breakdowns with us camped on the line another quick ruck saw Matt Jones break blind and Michael Stevens hitting the perfect line to score, crabby converted from the touchline. The score 19 pts to 5 the game looked over but back came Oxhey we defended our line well but the ref gave Oxhey a series of penalties and allowed them to run over and score whilst talking to our boy's.

The match finished with Cuffley camped on their line and unlucky not to add to the score. This type of game shows that we have the ability to go on and win our league, you have to dig in and working for e each other against teams like Oxhey because they never know when they are beaten. It was a fantastic team performance but I know we can play better so let's not get complacent and lose our focus. It also shows how we have developed as a team in that in yesterday's conditions we scored 3 tries all by our backs. What we need now is some dry weather and solid ground to really let our running backs close the title off for us. H.
