Saracens 22 17 Cuffley
Cuffley suffered their first defeat since last October away at Saracens. After the initial disappointment of losing the game and replaying the game in my head it struck me what a great game of rugby we played yesterday, it is always hard to take defeat and it doesn't make it any easier when everyone in the clubhouse assured me that they fielded only second team players. With certain clubs they feel they can't be seen to lose games to supposedly small clubs, this only proves that we are a team that deserves the respect they gave us by putting the side out they did.
The first 20 minutes was all Cuffley keeping Saracens pinned in their own 22, unfortunately we could not capitalize on this and Saracens held out. The second quarter was a feast of rugby. Saracens only had a few visits into Cuffley's half but they made the most of them from a turn over just outside our 22 the loose ball was gathered by their best player who ran a wide arc outstripping Cuffley's defence to score in the corner, Cuffley regrouped and were soon back on the front foot forcing Saracens to kick long down the middle of the field to clear their line, Will Payne took a fine catch drew the chaser passed to Phil Rose back in a Cuffley shirt for the first time this season he put the ball onto Matt Deamer who set off from inside our half he raced down the wing around and through the scrambling Saracens defence beating all comers to score the best try of the game.
The score 5 points each the ref started to come into the game with a big penalty count all against Cuffley, Saracens took an easy 3 points this was followed by Saracens touching down under the post for a poorly defended try given them a 15 to 5 lead. Cuffley again fought their way back and just before half time Crabby score a great individual try stepping the defence for a 7 pointer. Half time Saracens 15 v Cuffley 12.
The second half was a dogfight with both packs taking no prisoners Saracens broke the deadlock with their centre again pick up a loose ball and repeating his first half try to outstrip the Cuffley defence he added the conversion with a fine kick from the touchline. 22 v 15, with 10 mins to go we camped on their line with time running out we looked to be in in the corner but for a Saracens hand to deliberately knock on who the ref did not see and gave Saracens a scrum, our front row demolished their pack and from a resulting penalty we rushed our last chance for victory and the win slipped away.
This was a fine performance from our boys and we probably beat ourselves if we are honest but we will regroup and learn from this game and move on. We have a strong team ethic and play for each other and we will bounce back next Saturday v Watford in a league and cup doubleheader. Good to see Phil back and the return of Michael Stevens in a Cuffley Rugby Club shirt. H
