1st XV 2013/14 Season

Cuffley 1st 22 10 Old Ashmoleans

Playing at home on the famous sloping Rosedale pitch, Cuffley started well up the slope against a very strong OA's team who had been one of the only two teams to beat us so far this season.

We worked our way into their 22; keeping to our game plan by working hard to force OA's into making mistakes the pressure told giving Crabby a chance to put us on our way with a 3 point penalty. OA's bounced back and returned the favour by pinning us in our 22; we kept them at bay with some solid defence and at times desperate kicking. We regrouped and started to work as a unit, from a lineout on the 22 line Crabby put up a high kick which their suspect fullback tried to field between their 10 and 22 meter line only for Chilli to rise to his full height and take the ball before their player, he set off up the hill outstripping their defence to score a fine try under the posts, Crabby just missed giving us a 8 point lead.

OA's really picked their game up for the rest of the half forcing stoic defence from Cuffley, but we started to struggle at the side of the breakdown giving them some front foot ball they ran through some poor tackles and scored in the bottom corner, this was followed by a strong driving lineout to give them another try in the same corner. Half time OA's in front 10 pts to 8.

Cuffley started well down the slope with our younger fitter forwards starting to dominate at the breakdown smashing their scrum winning most of the set pieces regardless of who's ball it was, this gave us quality front foot ball, from a scrum Jonesy darted inside their open side drawing two tacklers he kept his hands free putting a great overhand pass to Crabby who drew his man and released Daisy into the hole he still had work to do and he stepped inside the first defender and with the line in sight he stepped another defender to touch down under the sticks for a brilliant score, Crabby added the conversion to put us ahead 15 v 10.

At this point OA's lost their composure and discipline having their No 8 first sinned binned then sent off for violent play. We kept at them, sensing the victory another fine move with both forwards and backs involved opening their defence with the ball out along the backline Chilli was on the end of the move with plenty of room he stepped inside his winger drew the inside defender and put Daisy away who had looped around to sprint in from 25 meters for his second brilliant try of the game, Crabby again added the 2 for a final score of 22 v 10.

This was another fantastic win for a team that never gives up and works for each other, Daisy and Ollie won MOTM but it gets harder each week to pick an individual out which is exactly the thing we are looking for in a squad, again well done boys keep it going. H
