Cuffley 1st 17 0 Bishops Stortford
Cuffley playing Stortford at home and for the third game running not only won but again kept a clean sheet. Our visitors, as I expected, turned up with a particular game which was based on their older and wiser pack trying every trick in a very old book, this frustrated Cuffley's young set of forwards, but we have a resilient group of players and they stuck to the task in hand.
The ref seemed more than sympathetic to them allowing Stortford to contest the breakdown as if we were playing under laws that we played with before most of our boys were born. Our set piece work was again working well but with their scrum not able to live with our boys they were allowed to go uncontested after 20 minutes. This ploy used far too often by sides to take our dominant front row out of the game was to give Stortford a lift and their backs some decent front football.
They may have got the ball in the right areas but our defence was sharp and aggressive stopping them before they made any headway the cheap scrum ball gave them. Our forwards to be honest struggled with their older forwards spoiling tactics stopping us getting the type of ball our lively backline was crying out for we went into half time without either side scoring.
If we played football we would be calling the match a game of two halves, Cuffley having received their halftime instructions set about putting our game plan into action, keeping their forwards moving around the park and playing more of a rucking game getting the ball to ground quickly and away from the breakdown. This tactic was the spark we needed the bring Crabby and the rest of our backs into the game. A quick ruck ball on the half way line on the far touchline saw Ash Lawson come away with the ball he had a few steps and spins like only Ash can and rather than look for contact he passed long to Crabby to open the play exactly what we were looking for, Crabby took the ball up slipped two tackles passed to Taylor on the crash he found Daisy who drew the defence to put Matt Deamer in the corner for the try of the season so far.
Cuffley now had their tails and heads up and we were soon again making good ground another sharp ruck and Ian Fryer was smashing through their defence on off well into their half he caught near their 22 but stayed strong in the tackle and found Dave Jones in support who galloped over to score, two tries in ten minutes by both wingers this is what dreams are made of.
Our final try was from a five mitre scrum after another fine move that Matt would have had his second but for their defender taking him out off the ball, from the scrum Ian picked up early and forced his way over for his second try in two games. Crabby slotted over for the extra two points, final score 17 v 0 to Cuffley.
Boys another fine result against a different type of side from last weeks but our ability to take stock at half time and change the way we were playing is testament to you as a squad our backs looked solid in defence and lethal in attack this gave our forwards in confidence to change our game and dominate the rest of the match, again well done.
