Cuffley 61 0 St Albans 2nd
HMMT 3, Round 2
Cuffley finally started there league campaign after last Saturday's 25 - 0 win against Tabard 2's due to a walk over.
Playing our first competitive game at our new ground at Botany Bay, we were hoping for a good start in Table 3 having won promotion last season. Unfortunately St Albans weren't as strong as we had hoped for, they turned up with 14 players and 15 minutes into the match Cuffley's front row had destroyed their front row at every scrum, they were forced to go uncontested.
Cuffley dominated the whole game keeping St Albans pinned on their line, Willy missed his first attempt to put points on the board but that soon changed with Matt Deamer running onto a through kick to score the first of 9 Cuffley tries on the day. Willy added the points and went on to finish with 8 conversions in the match. Nick Dean crashed over from a 5 metre scrum and Daisy was on the end of a great backs move to add another 5 points.
Half Time: Cuffley 21 - St Albans 0
The second half was a bit disjointed with St Albans now down to 13 men, when we did jell we scored, with 6 more tries the game was a route with Deamer and Daisy adding to their first half scores, Ronan benefited from a fine move which he started in our half putting Jimmy Palmer away into the corner only for him to just fail to score, he kept the ball alive and Ronan picked up and touched down in the corner. Matt Jones filling in at 10 finished off a fine game with a side stepping try under the posts. Capt. Ross Lovett smashed over from short range and Sam Ranner playing his first competitive game for the club at scrumhalf intercepted a pass to sprint in from 22 metres out. Daisy left the defence chasing shadows as he raced down the touchline and under the sticks for the last try of the game.
It's a great way to start the season with a big win, I'm sure we will have harder games as the season goes on but you can only play the team in front of you. From a coaching point it's good to see the team playing to a pattern that we have been working on, although we have areas of play still needing work.
Saturday's match saw a few new players within the squad Inc. Sam Ranner, James Pearcy and the returning to the club Jimmy, Badger, Palmer and James Hardacre.
Next Saturday we are away at Harrow 2:30pm kick off.
