Hitchin 2nd 22 18 Cuffley 1st
Cuffley travelled to Hitchin for an early kick off with a few changes in personal but still looked a strong team on paper .
What we are learning in this higher league is teams are fitter and perhaps a bit more clinical particularly when it comes to finishing a team off. The early exchanges went to the home team, they hit every breakdown harder and faster than our boys, we struggled to play at the same tempo that Hitchin did, we did finally get into the game but Hitchin were first on the scoreboard with 3pts from a penalty.
This shocked us into action and we worked our way up field earning Cuffley the chance to level the score with Michael Stevens splitting the uprights. From a spectators point of view this was probably a great game to watch ,from a coaching view it was an afternoon of highs and lows topped off with total frustration.
Our set pieces were for the most brilliant, the scrum dominated Hitchins and our lineout was totally in charge throughout the game, we scored both of our tries from our well worked driving lineout with Covey taking clean ball, Chris Marchant in full control in the armchair driving over the line for two touchdowns.
Either side of our scores Hitchin scored twice. With time running out and with Cuffley just in front we imploded and allowed Hitchin to take the win with the last action of the game. We have just lost our last two games in the same fashion , being able to close a game out is a lesson we need to learn very quickly.
